Writing and handwriting
At Lemington Riverside Primary School, we believe that writing is one of the most powerful ways children can communicate their ideas, feelings and learning. From the very beginning of school life, we work hard to develop confident, enthusiastic writers who take pride in their work and understand the importance of clear communication. Our English curriculum is designed to help every child develop a love of language, reading and writing, while building the skills they need for success both in school and beyond.
Writing at Lemington Riverside is taught through rich, engaging texts and meaningful experiences that inspire children to write for different purposes and audiences. Across the school, pupils are encouraged to develop their vocabulary, creativity and confidence through speaking, reading and writing opportunities in every subject. We place a strong emphasis on oracy, discussion and storytelling, helping children to articulate their ideas before transferring them into written work.
Alongside composition and creativity, we know that handwriting plays an essential role in becoming a successful writer. We believe that neat, fluent and well-presented handwriting helps children take pride in their learning and supports them in communicating their ideas clearly. Through our whole-school Nelson Handwriting approach, children are taught correct letter formation, joins, spacing and presentation progressively from Early Years through to Year 6.
Handwriting is taught regularly and explicitly, with staff modelling high expectations and supporting pupils to develop confidence, fluency and stamina over time. Children are encouraged to apply these skills across all areas of the curriculum so that presentation and pride in work become embedded habits. We recognise that every child develops at their own pace and provide additional support and adaptations where needed to ensure all pupils can succeed.
At Lemington Riverside, our aim is for every child to leave primary school as a confident reader, thoughtful speaker and capable writer, equipped with the communication skills they need for the next stage of their education and for life beyond the classroom.
