Mathematics
At Lemington Riverside Primary School, our mathematics curriculum is designed to give every child a deep, secure and connected understanding of number, calculation, geometry and statistics so they can reason, problem-solve and communicate with confidence. We follow an evidence-informed mastery approach that emphasises small steps, rich representations and the Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract (CPA) journey. Daily teaching combines explicit instruction, intelligent practice and discussion, with retrieval routines to strengthen long-term memory. We operate a “keep up, not catch up” philosophy: swift same-day interventions and targeted pre-teach sessions remove barriers and build readiness for the next lesson so that all pupils progress together.
How our Lemington values shape mathematics
- #Wearelemington – We connect maths to our local context, using meaningful data, measures and problems drawn from Lemington and the wider North East so pupils see mathematics as useful, relevant and empowering in their community.
- #Weareambitious – We set high expectations for every learner, providing depth and challenge (reasoning, multi-step problems and rich tasks) so pupils think like mathematicians and strive for excellence.
- #Weareglobal – We help pupils appreciate mathematics as a universal language, exploring diverse methods, histories and real-world applications so they understand its role in society and future study or work.
- #Wearedisciplined – We teach with precision and consistency: clear vocabulary (e.g., regroup/exchange), accurate notation, mathematical talk, and well-sequenced methods that build secure fluency and conceptual understanding.
- #Wearecollaborative – Pupils learn with and from each other through partner talk, shared strategies and collective problem-solving, developing oracy, reasoning and respectful challenge.
- #Weareresilient – We cultivate a growth mindset: mistakes are valued, perseverance is taught, and feedback guides improvement so pupils approach challenging tasks with confidence and independence.
